What are Visa 10.5 Chargebacks?
Visa 10.5 chargebacks are tied to fraudulent transactions. They are typically flagged when a cardholder claims they didn’t authorise a purchase. These chargebacks are especially difficult to reverse, especially if the transaction triggered a fraud alert through Visa’s Fraud Monitoring Program (VFMP).
Even if a transaction was authenticated using 3D Secure (3DS) or Address Verification Service (AVS), you’re not automatically protected. Fraud triggers can still result in a 10.5 chargeback. Merchants need to stay proactive.
Can You Defend Against a 10.5 Chargeback?
In most cases, the answer is no. But there are a few specific situations where you may be able to push back—and win.
- Duplicate Disputes: If the same transaction was already disputed under a different reason code, submit evidence showing the chargeback was already handled.
- Refunds Issued Pre-Chargeback: If you refunded the customer before the chargeback was filed, provide proof of the refund to shut it down.
- Cardholder Consent: If the cardholder confirms in writing that they’re no longer disputing the charge, that’s solid evidence to reverse the chargeback.
Visa’s Fraud Monitoring Is Changing—Here’s What That Means
Most 10.5 chargebacks hit merchants enrolled in Visa’s Fraud Monitoring Programs (VFMP and VDMP). But starting April 1st, Visa is rolling out a new system: the Visa Advanced Monitoring Program (VAMP).
Here’s What You Need To Know
On April 1st, Visa is replacing VFMP and VDMP with a new programme called VAMP (Visa Advanced Monitoring Program). Merchants currently in VFMP may no longer be subject to 10.5 chargebacks if they do not exceed the new VAMP fraud limits.
What’s Changing with VAMP?
- VFMP and VDMP are being phased out.
- Visa’s monitoring criteria are changing. Merchants should review the updated rules to understand what qualifies as excessive fraud under VAMP.
It’s time to tighten up your fraud prevention game. Use 3DS, improve fraud filters and track your chargeback ratios.
